En 1982 il obtient un role dans la serie televise family ties ou li interprete un jeune homme conservateur, Alex P. Keaton, obsédé par l'argent et la politique, élévé par deux parents hippies avec il vit toujours cela durera jusqu'en 1989.

Depuis 1998 on sait qu'il est atteint de la maladie de Parkison avec qui sa faisait deja 7 ans qu'il se battait.
Il a crée un fondation a son nom.
